Growing

Fig leaf (lat. Ficus carica)

Fig is deciduous tree with branchy treetop. Older branches are grey, younger are dark green.

Habitat
Smokva
It is not choosy to the position and the ground but that we must provide a sufficient quantity of water in certain phases of vegetation. The cold resistance of the fig trees depends on its maturity. During dormancy it can withstand short-term temperatures down to -15°C (5°F). Young trees are susceptible to low temperatures. In continental areas, it is desirable to be planted in areas protected from the wind and low temperatures. Heaviest and the best quality fruits gives with irrigation and a temperature of 35°C (95°F). A tree can grows in thickness of over 1 m and height up to 8 m.

Propagation and planting

Figs can be propagated in three ways: by cuttings, grafting and seeds. However, the inexperienced gardeners are advised to purchase seedlings from plant nurseries that have higher yields.
In the Mediterranean areas the fig tree should be planted in the fall and in the spring in the continental area. Before planting, roots must be trimmed. Seedlings should be planted at the same depth as it was in the plant nursery. The root need to be covered with soil and pressed down firmly and then
added moderate amounts of fertilizer which  must not have contact with the root. Again, cover with the rest of the soil, press it firmly and water it heavily.
Spacing between the plants depends on the sort of the plant, and ranges approximately 4-5 m.

Maintenance

Figs must be pruned every year but avoid to cut thicker branches because of figs difficulty to heal the wounds. Occasional cutting just thinner and younger branches is not a problem for the fig tree. If you still have to cut thicker branches, after cutting protect it with wax. Pruning involves thinning of the fig tree (removal of shoots to the base) and cheating (shortening the length of shoots).

Vintage

The first fruits can be expected in the third year. The fruits are harvested with stems and are incapable of ripening after harvest. It is best to pick early in the morning.
